The second Champions League group matches for today is going to be a very interesting one as the teams that lost in the previous outings will do everything possible to get something out of today’s clash while those that won their first leg will try to win this second one in order to get more chances of dominating their various groups and later on, progress to the next stage of the competition.
Below are my predictions for today’s matches. Just take your time and go through the previews to see the reasons why I made my picks
Some Selected Previews of The UEFA, Champions League Matches – Group Stage
The Second Outing
1. Viktoria Plzen vs Inter Milan
Even though Viktoria Plzen’s challenge is a little lighter this time around, Inter Milan are still a difficult opponent for the Czech team after they were humiliated 5-1 by Barca last week. However, they did recover with a 3-2 victory over Sigma Olomouc in their domestic League over the weekend.
Inter Milan’s performance this year has been terrible; their 1-0 success over Torino was just their second win in their previous five games. They also failed to win their opening group Champions League match, losing 2-0 to Bayern Munich at home.
Today, Viktoria Plzen will try to capitalize on their home-field advantage, but Inter Milan should have enough quality players to take the win, especially now they lost their first match.
2. FC Porto vs Club Brugge
After losing to Atletico Madrid 2-1, FC Porto bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Chaves to restore confidence before welcoming Club Brugges. Porto’s striker Mehdi Taremi, not being present due to his red card against Atletico Madrid is a big loss for them.
Club Bruges on the other hand has won its previous six games in all competitions and has recorded three straight shutouts. For the first time since they suffered a 1-0 defeat in Portugal 6 years ago, they will face Porto.
Porto should see a close fight but are tipped to eventually come out with a win.
3. Liverpool vs Ajax
Liverpool’s Champions League season got off to a terrible start when they fell to Napoli in a 4-1 scoreline. With only two victories in all competitions so far this season, the Reds have performed poorly. On the other hand, Ajax have excelled. They won seven straight games to go to the top of the Eredivisie table in the Dutch League and tie Napoli for first place in Group A in terms of points.
Although they might have to be content with a point, Liverpool will gain from the extra rest after their game against Wolves was postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth. Moreover, Ajax have consistently produced over 2.5 goals in their past 6 Champions League matches. Liverpool will be hungry to get their first win but even if they do, I think Ajax has what it takes to score so I am picking on both teams to score and over 2.5 goals to come on board
4. Bayern Munich vs Barcelona
After a surprising 2-2 draw with VfB Stuttgart at the weekend, Bayern Munich has won just two of their last five matches in competitive games. However, they have won their last four meetings with Barcelona. Now,
this Barcelona team is different because of ex-Bayern Munich player Robert Lewandowski that will be leading the scoreline has been scoring a lot of goals.
With Lewandowski on fire, Xavi’s team has won five straight games across all competitions, scoring at least three goals in each of those victories. It’s a game that Barcelona might win and am very sure that both teams have what it takes to score goals and even produce over 2.5 goals in what could end up being a really entertaining match in Munich.
